What it means to work for a person with a disability

Over 80 people in the region who have been helped into work with disability support structures. Imagine what’s possible with a Capacity Building and Inclusion Hub.

People with a disability are 2.5 times more likely to be unemployed compared to those without a disability, and in the last decade disability employment decreased by 3 percent, while employment for people without a disability increased by 23 percent.

But when people with a disability are given training, onboarding, and provided a network of support, their employment prospects improve significantly. Ricky Phelan started working through supported employment doing [tasks]. He now works five days in open employment at [where], while Sophie works at BYL coffee shop. Jeff works as a casual at the Hotel American and Jason at Kia with support provided where needed.

Build a Better Future plans to integrate and expand successful employment programs. That includes external work groups such as Work Crew, which sends out work teams to perform landscape gardening, and grounds maintenance, and open employment placements in areas from veterinary care, to childcare, to retail stores.

  • Gardening & horticulture

The Capacity Building and Inclusion Hub will house a plant nursery and education centre where people with a disability will learn from experts & groups like Landcare and local First Nations groups about Bush Tucker.

  • Construction & furniture

The proposed new site would include a woodworking workshop where participants will learn about construction, woodwork and will be offered opportunities to work on local building projects.

  • Farming & food prep

Learning about nature, animals, and how to cook - both at home and in a business setting - the Capacity Building and Inclusion Hub will house a commercial kitchen and dining area to hone those skills.
