With 36 percent of regional and remote young people with a disability leaving school before the age of 16, and with less than 7 percent of students from special schools going on to employment in the community, there is a great need for post-secondary school education, training, and programs in the Echuca-Moama region.

Through the local SLES program, Talisha went through a discovery process to identify vocational skills, individual support needs, and her aspirations. She worked on her soft skills such as communication, teamwork, adaptability, conflict resolution, flexibility, problem solving, and is making progress toward achieving her goal to eventually work in child care or teaching. Talisha is excited to commence work experience in the new year at Journey Childcare Centre. Her confidence is growing everyday.

Build a Better Future and the Capacity Building and Inclusion Hub will run post-secondary education and training programs from its community hub, and develop specific skill-sets through its landscape gardening, hospitality, car washing, and bike repair centres. With a funded community centre, we can roll out education and training in more areas.

  • Communication Centre

The Capacity Building and Inclusion Hub will teach people with a disability how to effectively communicate and master the language skills required for work, study, and to convey their day-to-day needs.

  • Art Courses

The Hub will provide two art studios and a music studio that will be able to be utilised not only by people with a disability, but the broader community. Art exhibitions and concerts will be put on in the shared community theatre.

  • Life Skills

The Hub will provide short courses that lead to employment, as well as general life skills like learning how to repair a bike, about bush tucker, plants and farming, or how to communicate better.
