We know that 17% of people with a disability report experiencing social isolation. Build a Better Future believes part of that is a function of the way people with a disability are often physically and structurally isolated from the broader community.

The Disability Royal Commission found that the social model of disability - where we look to create a socially integrated model of engagement between people with and without a disability - is the best way to not only help people with a disability to achieve social and financial independence, but is of great benefit to the community and its sense of self.

The Capacity Building and Inclusion Hub includes plans to develop ten units for people with a disability to live in. Some will be devoted to helping prepare people with a disability on skills for living independently, like cooking, cleaning, and paying bills. Other units will be available for people with a disability to live in short-to-medium term. Beyond day-to-day living, the hub will provide courses on music, art, Bush Tucker, Landcare, bicycle repair, and sports facilities within the hub.

  • Household tasks

Those living in the onsite units will learn the practical side of living independently: from washing clothes, to washing dishes, to cleaning and looking after the garden.

  • Financial literacy

Learning how to budget and pay for household expenses is an important skill not just for running a household but managing money outside of the home and planning for the future.

  • Personal interests

Independent living is not just about surviving, it’s about thriving. The Inclusion & Capacity Building hub provides music, art, & woodwork workshops, gardening courses, and sports facilities all within close proximity.
